The Las Vegas Strip Isn’t Actually in Las Vegas

“The Las Vegas Strip sits just outside the city of Las Vegas, in an unincorporated town called Paradise. In 1950 Las Vegas was in debt, and the mayor wanted to pull the booming casino road into the city and tax it. Casino bosses, led by the man running the Flamingo, asked Clark County to make them a town of their own, and the county said yes. Even the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign stands about 4.5 miles (7 km) outside the city limits.
