This week in Las Vegas, a crowd had one of those moments on camera. 👇 At President Trump’s rally at the Red Rock Casino on August 5th, Nevada’s Republican Governor Joe Lombardo paused to honor Officer Austin “Zade” Abdelnabi, a 30-year-old Las Vegas Metro police officer and United States Marine veteran who had been shot and killed in the line of duty two days earlier, ambushed responding to a call about an armed suspect. He left behind a wife, his parents, and three siblings. As Lombardo said the officer’s name, part of the crowd booed. The governor stopped, visibly taken aback, and corrected them: “No, no, we’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away here recently.” He then held a moment of silence. Some will say the crowd was simply confused, that they didn’t realize who Abdelnabi was. But listen to the setup. Lombardo’s exact lead-in was, “I know the pastor spoke about Officer Abdelnabi.” The crowd had just heard a pastor eulogize this man. The room already knew he was a fallen officer being honored. The only new piece of information between that context and the boo was the sound of his last name, a name that reads as Arabic. That’s what the reflex responded to. Commentators across the spectrum drew the obvious conclusion, and the officer’s own department put out a statement mourning a hero the rally crowd had just jeered. This was a “Back the Blue” event. And a fallen officer got booed on reflex the instant his name sounded foreign. It’s a small moment.
