Powerful Monsoon Storm, Flooding Swept Away Homes, Cars in Las Vegas, Reno Nevada
“A powerful surge of monsoonal moisture has unleashed severe thunderstorms, torrential downpours, quarter-sized hail, and destructive flash flooding across Southern Nevada, abruptly ending a record-breaking 124-day dry spell at Harry Reid International Airport and leaving thousands of residents without electrical power. The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas, issued a sequence of urgent Flash Flood Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for Clark County and adjacent regions. Around,Volatile atmospheric conditions broke through weeks of intense desert heat waves, triggering microbursts characterized by 60 mph wind gusts and rapid precipitation accumulation. According to KLAS 8 News Now, the east side of the valley, particularly near Nellis Air Force Base and Centennial Hills, bore the initial brunt of the cell. Thunderstorms are bringing heavy doses of rain, hail, flash floods — and even a tornado warning — in Reno-Sparks and nearby counties while crews battle wildfires just north of the metro area. Motorists can be seen slowing down at several stretches of Interstate 580 in Reno on Thursday afternoon as pools of water started forming on the freeway from sudden downpours.
