LVMPD Shut Down the Vegas Lowrider Scene…

“The Las Vegas Lowrider Super Show brought out some of the wildest lowriders I’ve ever seen — fully engraved builds, insane paint, custom interiors, show-quality undercarriages, hoppers, Cadillacs, Impalas and some of the highest-level lowrider builds in the country. I traveled nearly 300 miles from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for one of the biggest weekends in lowriding, but the weekend quickly became about more than just the cars. After checking out the nighttime lowrider scene, we made our way to the Las Vegas Lowrider Super Show to see some truly next-level builds, including cars that gave me even more inspiration for my own 1981 Cadillac Coupe DeVille project. Later that night, we headed to a fully permitted lowrider event hoping to catch some hopping — only for the event to be shut down by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department before it could really get started. According to the organizer, the lot was paid for, the event was permitted, and the setup included fencing, staffing and facilities for the crowd. That raised a bigger question for me: if cities want safer car culture, wouldn’t working with sanctioned events make more sense than eliminating the places designed to keep the culture controlled?
