“It’s a weekday morning at a casino literally named “the California,” in the middle of the Las Vegas desert, and the coffee shop is packed with Filipino families speaking Ilocano over breakfast. Ask where they’re from, and most won’t say the Philippines. Not their parents, not even their grandparents. Nevada’s largest Asian community got here by a route nobody teaches. The real trail runs through a sugar plantation in 1906, a Navy rule from 1901 that boxed Filipino sailors into a single job for seventy years, and a struggling casino owner who accidentally built “the Ninth Island” in the desert. Two separate Filipino Americas formed a thousand miles apart, and Las Vegas is where they finally collided.”
