British Airways 2276: Fire on the Runway in Las Vegas

“September 8, 2015: British Airways flight 2276, a Boeing 777 bound for London, was on its takeoff roll in Las Vegas when the left GE90 engine burst. A severed fuel line fed a fire, and a crosswind pushed the flames toward the cabin. The captain rejected the takeoff and called Mayday. After the evacuation order, the right engine kept running for 43 seconds, blowing two slides out of position until the relief pilot noticed and shut it down. Some passengers grabbed their bags. All 170 got out; the fire was out within about five minutes of the Mayday. The cause: a fatigue crack in a high-pressure compressor disc, in a spot no inspection procedure covered. Captain Chris Henkey, 63, was due to retire a week later. It was his last flight.
