Why the Las Vegas Strip Isn’t in Las Vegas #shorts #history #documentary #usa

“The most famous street in Las Vegas isn’t actually in Las Vegas. In 1941 a hotel man built a ranch casino just past the city line, where land was cheap and the city couldn’t tax him. When a whole row of casinos copied him, the mayor wanted to annex them all — so in December 1950 the casino bosses asked the county to make them a town of their own: Paradise. The state tried to merge it into Las Vegas in 1975, and the Nevada Supreme Court threw the law out in 1976. The airport and the famous welcome sign are outside the city too.
