Las Vegas Got 9 Months of Rain in One Morning — And the Desert Floor Wouldn’t Soak It Up
“efore Sunday, October 11, 2026, the official gauge at Harry Reid International Airport had caught 1.10 inches of rain all year. On Sunday it caught 1.08 inches, most of it before sunrise. That broke the record for the date and tied the wettest October day in Las Vegas since 1947. The water came from the remnants of Rachel, a former Category 3 Pacific hurricane, pulled inland by a cold trough. Between 5:33 and 7:05 a.m. the National Weather Service logged swift-water rescues at nine intersections and on the Strip itself. This is why an inch of rain floods one of America’s driest cities: mountains that wring out the storm, a slope of gravel and caliche that will not soak it up, and a flood control system of 113 basins and 722 miles of channels that is designed to send the water down the streets.
