Class-action lawsuit challenges Las Vegas Valley Water District excessive use charge

“A new class action lawsuit is being filed challenging the Las Vegas Valley Water District’s “excessive use charge,” with plaintiffs arguing the fee goes beyond encouraging conservation and instead amounts to a punitive penalty for customers who exceed certain usage levels. The lawsuit targets a charge the plaintiffs say affects about 10 percent of the district’s roughly 370,000 customers. They argue the fee is excessive and functions as a “money grab” under the guise of conservation. Carol Reynolds, a Clark County resident who lives on a half-acre lot served by the Las Vegas Valley Water District, said her most recent bill totaled $658.05, including $261 in excessive use charges.
